  1. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an educational therapist?

An educational therapist is a trained professional

who (a) provides academic tutoring and remedial

instruction, (b) addresses social, emotional and

self-regulatory issues that interfere with learning, and

  1. (c)offers support, information and case management to

families and individuals struggling with learning.

How do you determine services for individual students?

I begin by listening to parent concerns and reviewing pertinent records.   At times I request additional assessments.   Student needs are then identified, and a plan to meet those needs is devised.

Do you provide testing?

I am qualified to do educational testing, but I am not licensed to do psychological testing.  For clients who require psychological or neuropsychological testing, I can provide referrals to qualified professionals.

Can you assist clients with more comprehensive needs?

Since school and academic issues are often complex, an important aspect of my work is helping clients find the additional services they need. I can help clients locate allied professionals such as speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, developmental pediatricians, psychologists, counselors, advocates or vocational specialists.

Why might adults seek the services of an educational therapist?

Since problems in college or on the job can often be traced to learning difficulties, an educational therapist can help adults learn to deal with these challenges more effectively.

What kind of time commitment is required?

I typically meet with students in my office during the after-school hours.  Daytime hours are available as well.  At least two sessions a week is recommended.  Significant learning problems need intensive work if progress is to be made.  Some clients work with an educational therapist for several years, others for a shorter period of time.  It really depends on client needs.

How much do services cost?

There is no charge for initial consultations.  Fees for instructional/ coaching sessions and case management services are $40 per hour.  I charge mileage for travel to off-site locations.  Clients are asked to pay for consumable materials.

Are your services covered by insurance?

Educational therapy is rarely covered by medical insurance.

Do clients need to sign a contract?

Yes, I ask clients to sign a contract when they begin the treatment plan or when there is a significant change in the treatment plan.  The contract is not set for any specific amount of time, and families can discontinue services when they feel they are no longer needed.
